Mariah Tate Klemens (b. 1990) is an artist who creates sculptural reproductions of domestic objects. By handcrafting and remaking mundane items, Klemens invests them with a sort of sympathetic magic that transforms them from their bluntly practical function into devotional objects that serve as repositories of poignant recall. Often her work includes a transformation of material into a more tactile, cerebral form than that of the referent. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Klemens lived across the Northwest and exhibited in cities such as Bellingham, WA, Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, and Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2019 she received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and now lives and works in Milwaukee, WI where she teaches at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and is a freelance curator.
